Yesterday we meditated about the importance of Candles at the season of Christmas and its history, today we are going to see the about the “Festival of lights” which is been celebrated among Jews at this season, it is “Hanukkah”

Hanukkah is celebrated for about 8 days among Jews; it is also called as the “Festival of Dedication”. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.

The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a unique candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukiah, one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. The typical Menorah consists of eight branches with an additional raised branch.

In the year 167 b.c.e., Antiochus IV, became the ruler of the third of Alexander’s Greek empire that included Syria and Israel. He wanted everyone to worship him and raised his own statue over all the places. He hated Jews as they didn’t worship him. So he planned to keep his statue in the Jews synagogues which was opposed by the High Priest. He killed the High Priest and banned circumcision and Sabbath observance, and introduced pagan worship into the Temple in Jerusalem.

Judah Maccabee, son of the High Priest fled to the wilderness and launched a guerrilla rebellion to conquer Jerusalem. After two years, the rebels succeeded in reconquering Jerusalem. On the third anniversary of the Temple’s desecration it was rededicated in an eight day celebration.

And John Maccabee entered the Temple and was there for eight days Thanking God over his victory. Temple candelabrum will be filled everyday with the Holy Olive oil that it would burn whole Day, everyday the oil will be refilled by the Priests but the eight Days when John  Maccabee was inside the Temple, miraculously, the oil, sufficient for only one day, burnt for eight.

Since then Jews started to celebrate this “Festival of Lights or Festival of dedication”. Yes this very light “Jesus Christ” has come to enlighten our life and fill our cups with the Holy Oil (Holy Spirit) that we may sustain until He comes! Will you then welcome this Child with Candles in your house?

Surely the light will not only fill your house but your hearts that you may clearly see His Plan in your life! God Bless you. Amen.
