Holly & Ivy

Holly & Ivy

Holly is thorny plant which belongs to a bush family, has naturally hewn out designs in its leaves and will be evergreen in all the seasons. The edge of its leaves are so sharp that if any animal or beast which even gently comes in contact with its leaf will get injured.

In the beginning the fruit of this holly will be white in colour and bitter in taste yet it has been created with wonderful aroma. When God created the trees and plants He created some plants to bring forth the fruits to eat, some for medicines, some plants to look beautiful (To adorn HIS WORLD) and some plants to spread wonderful aroma. In this, Holly comes under 3rd and 4th (Beautiful with sweet aroma) category though there was fibre like strands were suspended beautifully under its fruit.

This Holly is considered to be the friend of Shepherds. Shepherds use to keep their female pregnant goat near this Holly when they are about to deliver. It is said that when these goats deliver their kids by seeing this beautiful Holly they deliver colourful and a strong kid.

This Holly heard the songs and the good news from the Angels. Traditional history says that when this Holly heard this good news it asked to a young boy who is a shepherd to take it to the Redeemer (Jesus Christ). That young boy cut off a small branch with Hollies fruit and took it to the Saviour in his hands.

This young boy offered this Holly at the feet of Jesus as his offering and stood near Him. The Holly which is kept under the feet of baby Jesus withered its shining strands and those strands grew and filled the manger. These stands made a CRANDLE to Baby Jesus who was placed in swaddling clothes. Today we couldn’t see these strands in the Holly fruit, because it dedicated its Beauty and its Beneficiency to Jesus Christ.

When the strands made a Cradle to baby Jesus, He was filled with joy with the Offering of that young boy and leaped, at that time the thorns in the leaves of Holly pierced the feet of Jesus and blood started to flow and shed on the fruits of Holly. Yon! The Holly fruits which were white turned to Red!

By the Blood of Jesus! The bitter fruit of Holly changed into sweet. Holly which was ignored by all other than Shepherds is now turned to a “fruit which is desired by all” on the other side by His blood all the thorns were withered. Holly became a beautiful Evergreen plant without any thorns.

Ivy is a climbing plant which mostly grows under the green tree.  Ivy is used as a symbol of resurrection. It is a parasite which takes food from dependent tree. Since when Ivy grows under a tree it will absorb all the strength of that tree. Jesus said,” I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Abide in me, and I in you” (John 15:1, 4). We need to abide in Jesus like Ivy which depends on its green tree.

Even it is said that the tree in which Ivy grows will die. Jesus Himself said that in gospel that He is the green tree “For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?”(Luke 23:31). Ivy takes the strength of its dependent but in our life Jesus the evergreen tree Himself gave His life to save us. “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father” (Galatians 1:4).

Also, In olden days, Ivy is used as a victory symbol or the symbol of honour, when an emperor comes back winning the battle they used to make a wreath made of Ivy for his bravery and welcome him with it. This Ivy wreath is also used to appreciate the wisdom poets. If we stick to this evergreen tree (Jesus) even we will be like a wreath of glory in His hands.” Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God” (Isaiah 62:3). Amen.
